Marbella - the place with the "certain something"
 |
Marbella is one of the well-known and most popular places on the Costa del Sol in Andalucia. One of the reasons lies in the town itself, secured from the real heat of July and August (the hot months are tolerable due to the fresh sea breeze), exposed to the sunshine and pleasant climate all through the year. Bad weather is a rarity. The mountain La Concha with its 1200 m high peak above Marbella area is the reason for the exceptionally good climate, as it tends to hold back the bad weather. But as you will find out the weather is only one reason why so much visitors and immigrants come to Marbella.

Despite its popularity among the foreigners Marbella has kept its original charm and Andalucian character which you can easily experience by turning the back to the undoubtedly beautiful port and going to the old town instead where you can find the well-known centrally situated Plaza de Los Naranjos (orange square) from which you can get to the pretty narrow streets of the old town going in all directions. Marbella also attracts its visitors by the extensive range of the shops. You will see a mixture of businesses that have designer clothes as well as local goods on offer. Local workmanship mixes with European known brands. Gloriously colorful ceramic work and famous Spanish leather are also the things to look for.
The beautiful long sandy beaches offer everything the visitor desires for. Even Queen Isabelle said once on her visit to Marbella "Que mar tan bella" (what a marvelous sea), a statement that spoke for itself and gave Marbella quite a name at that time.
Spectacular seafront invites one to stroll in the evening. One can but admire beautifully landscaped parks with benches to rest on, water features and fountains, statues that ornament the town so delicately and give it its originality. As any Spanish town Marbella holds a few weekly markets were both new and secondhand goods are sold. Good piece of advice for the market browsers - bargain, bargain and bargain.

The most fascinating thing is the nightlife of Marbella. It astonishes you with a huge range of restaurants, theaters, cinemas and nightclubs. In contrast to Puerto Banus where (not only) the nightlife can be described as heart of entertainment, Marbella offers the right places for every age and for everybody's purse. Many bars and discotheques open only around midnight and the people celebrate until the early hours of the morning. If one prefers to do it easy and explore, one can return to the old town of Marbella were a big selection of "tapas" bars is available with excellent choice of Spanish specialties.
Marbella with its beautiful beaches and sea, leisure facilities and typical Spanish flair is simply the ideal destination with that "certain something" to which so many people are magnetically drawn to, eager to escape from the rest of the world.
